Outside of her beaches, Mauritius has so much more to offer ... Here is a selection of five of the many tourist attractions of the island.
For the first time in its history, Maurice cross the threshold of one million tourists this year. A satisfactory result, but below forecast in 2002 by the authorities, which projected 2 million visitors in 2014.
The 2008 financial crisis and its repercussions in Europe, the largest market on the island, have been there. But they have not prevented the Seychelles or the neighboring Maldives display increases attendance above 10% in 2013 when Maurice had to settle for a mere 3%. More worrisome: the hotel occupancy rate has sunk up to 55% last year, and tourist spending declined 9%.
The sector still weighs 7% of GDP and 5% of jobs, but, as pointed out by the Mauritian professionals, it must reinvent itself to start a new cycle. While some rely on the development of high value-added segments, such as business tourism or medical tourism, the priority is to regain visibility and diversify the offer "out of beaches." Here are five good reasons to succumb to the charms of Mauritius.
